Cultivating Legacy: The Role of Leadership and Discipleship Training

In the realm of leadership, there exists a timeless pursuit – the quest to leave a legacy. This aspiration isn't merely about personal achievements but rather about the impact that endures beyond one's tenure. One of the most profound ways to achieve this enduring influence is through intentional leadership and discipleship training. By investing in the development of future leaders, individuals can create pathways for legacy that extend far beyond their own lifetimes. In this season of my life, what God is stirring deep within my soul, is a desire to cultivate legacy.

Legacy is the essence of what we leave behind – the imprint we make on the world and the lives we touch. It's not merely about the accumulation of wealth or power, but rather the lasting impact on people, organizations, and communities. Effective leadership is about more than just guiding in the present; it's about shaping the future. Similarly, discipleship involves imparting knowledge, values, and skills to nurture the growth of others. For me, the best place to deposit the wealth of knowledge I have gained over life’s experience is with my daughters and those the Lord has called me to lead in marketplace ministry. It’s a joy that compares to few other things in life.

Leadership serves as the catalyst for building a legacy. Great leaders understand that their influence extends far beyond their immediate sphere of control. They recognize the importance of developing successors who can carry forward their vision and values. By investing in those you get to lead, you grant them confidence to step into positions of influence and continue the work that has been started. Isn’t this the heart of legacy?

Effective leadership training goes beyond imparting technical skills or management techniques. It encompasses the cultivation of character, vision, emotional intelligence, and spiritual grit. Leaders must learn to inspire and motivate others, navigate complex challenges, and make decisions that align with their values and goals. This isn’t for the faint of the heart. However, through mentorship, coaching, and experiential learning, aspiring leaders can hone their abilities and prepare to carry the torch of leadership into the future.

In parallel with leadership training, discipleship plays a crucial role in building a legacy. At the center of the gospel of Jesus is the command to make disciples.  Discipleship involves the intentional process of investing in others, helping them grow spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually. I have learned that I cannot separate developing leaders from discipleship. Just as a mentor imparts wisdom to a protégé, a disciple-maker shares their knowledge, experiences, and faith with those who are eager to learn.

Discipleship creates a ripple effect, as each disciple grabs hold of the call to make disciples, the legacy is extended. It's a cycle of growth and multiplication, where the seeds of wisdom and guidance are planted in fertile hearts, yielding a bountiful harvest for generations to come. Through discipleship, individuals not only pass on their knowledge but also their values, beliefs, and principles, ensuring that legacy endures in the lives of those they have mentored. It is following in the footsteps of Paul when he boldly said, “Follow me as I follow Christ”. To disciple well means you are comfortable with others mimicking you while they learn to find their individual stride. This is the scary and yet beautiful invitation of cultivating legacy. The goal is not to create mini versions of yourself, but the reality is that for a period, they will sound and act like you as they find their unique voice in the kingdom of God.

Creating pathways for legacy through leadership and discipleship requires intentionality and commitment. It's about recognizing the importance of investing time in others. This cannot always be scripted or planned. I have found that some of the most profound moments I have had with others that I am mentoring have come through inconvenience and chaos. And yet, in these real-life moments, valuable lessons and deep wells of character are cultivated.

In the grand tapestry of human history, the threads of legacy are woven by those who dare to follow in Jesus’ footsteps. His legacy, one of sacrificial love and compelling compassion, changed the course of history. And from a posture of surrender, I have chosen to pour out my life following in his footsteps. The next decade of my life will be spent pouring into the next generation of Generals in the faith so that we can hold the line in the battle that wages between good and evil. The valuable lessons that I have learned from those who went before me, I will be diligent to pass on to those coming after me. Freely I have received, and freely I will give.
